The Georgia Local Option Sunday Sales Coalition was formed in preparation for the 2007 legislative session by the Georgia Food Industry Association and the Georgia Association of Convenience Stores. For many years, a large number of grocery and convenience store customers have been expressing the desire to purchase beer or wine while shopping and running errands on Sundays. During the 2007 session, the Coalition worked tirelessly to pass Local Option Sunday Sales legislation on behalf of their customers. Unfortunately, the legislation was not allowed a vote in the full State Senate after passing out of committee. Again in 2008, the State Senate refused to act on Local Option Sunday Sales. However, another alcohol-related bill was amended in the State House of Representatives to allow for a vote on Sunday sales. This legislation passed unanimously out of the House committee but stalled due to election year politics. Since its inception, the Coalition has received a tremendous outpouring of support from everyday Georgians wanting to help in the effort to pass Local Option Sunday Sales legislation. Multiple Facebook groups and online petition drives have been started by concerned citizens. The Coalition is committed advocating on behalf of these citizens until we are successful. The 2011 legislative session presents our best opportunity yet to pass Local Option Sunday Sales legislation. We hope that you will join us by contacting your legislator in support of our effort. |
